My cousin Valeria (V)

All the rest of the night we were exchanging complicit glances. I was dying to be alone with her and retake where we left off. Not even sure what it was that followed, but I needed to know.

Unfortunately, that wasn't possible. The rest of the night our cousins were with us every moment.       I'm going to look for something else to drink.I said in a moment, looking at Valeria, to make her understand that I was waiting for her inside.       Bank! Let's all go straight, it's already refreshing, let's go and keep going inside!- My cousin cut off my possibility of being alone with my cousin by ruining everything. That was the only attempt I made to talk to her again. Not long after moving into the dining room, everyone started packing up and saying it was time to leave. I didn't have much choice but to do the same. After all, my aunts were repeating that it was late, inviting everyone cordially to go home. I greeted my cousins, my aunts, and my old folks. It ended with a farewell at which, surrounded by the whole family, I couldn't help but hug and give a kiss.-       HAPPY BIRTHDAY PRIMITA, I HOPE YOU HAD A GOOD TIME TODAYI said honestly, without any kind of double intention. It's something I used to say in those situations.       Yes, very, thank you– He said it to me with an ear-to-ear smile. When he said that, I understood the double meaning of my sentence and returned his smile. –       Good! It seems that things got sorted out!- Sofia pointed out that she was just behind her sister. It was true. The scene was completely different. I had arrived at that house and my cousin had received me with eyes full of fury and during almost the whole night, she hadn't wanted to speak to me. And now she was walking alongside me while we shared a complicit smile and a secret only known to us. 3:30 in the morning when I got home and didn't get to sleep before 5, I was still repeating that moment over and over in my head. I wanted to send a message to my cousin but didn't want to appear desperate. I was the older one, mature in all this, couldn't behave like a needy guy. She was twenty years old. Happy, beautiful, and fun. My cousin. What had seemed like a fantasy just weeks ago was now becoming reality. --------- 2:30 pm. Headache. Sun coming through the window and hitting me straight in the face. That's how my wake-up call went. It took me a few minutes to fully come around but when I finally did, everything that happened the night before started coming back. Tasting with my hand, I searched for my cell phone on the bedside table, but it wasn't there. Not the first time this had happened. I rummaged through the sheets with my arms and bingo! I had fallen asleep holding my cell phone again. I turned on the screen and yes! I had unread messages. Had my cousin written to me? I unlocked the phone and entered WhatsApp. Three unread messages in total. All from the same person. All from Laura. -       Hey! How are you?- None       Do you feel like doing something tonight?-        A friend suggested a bar that I think might please you.

The messages were from a couple of hours ago. With the cell phone between the sheets, with a pillow on top, just like I had found it, clearly I hadn't made enough noise when they entered to wake me up.

I didn't even think about responding. After reading the messages, I let the cell phone fall onto the bed again and stayed looking at the ceiling.

Why hadn't Valeria sent anything yet? Was she going to leave it like that and just move on? Maybe she was scared of what had happened. No, no, a part of me said she wanted me to kiss her too, she wanted me to be the one who kissed her, so she didn't say anything more. That's why I smiled after. Maybe she didn't know how to handle that situation. I couldn't blame her; it was happening to me too and I was supposed to be the bigger one of the two. The one with more experience and all the answers. After all, I was the one who kissed her.

I decided to get up and prepare something to eat. While doing so, I remembered that I hadn't responded to Laura's messages. Honestly, I didn't know how to act towards her after what happened the night before. Valeria had acted like that when she found out something was going on between us; it would probably be for the worse if we kept seeing each other.

I had many mixed feelings. On one hand, I liked Laura. But if I had to choose, she didn't make me feel the same way my first love did. Valeria had me totally crazy. Every time I thought about her, her image was very clear in my head. Her smile, her eyes, her whole body posing for a photo, smiling, showing off that perfect body that drove me wild. Every time I thought about all that, my body felt the need to have her in my arms. Grabbing her belt with my hands and bringing her towards me. Feeling her arms around my shoulders with her hands joining behind my head. Our fixed gaze on each other's eyes.

Laura didn't make me feel all that. She was just Laura, a little girl. Funny, I liked it and it was good, yes, but that was the feeling, there it ended.

There was something more I had to consider after what happened the night before. Well, she was a young girl, 20 years old, a girl. Who knows how she would react if after kissing her, I kept going out with my friend? Who knows what could happen if I did something she didn't like? I felt a bit of panic. What kind of mess had I gotten myself into? The situation I had imagined the night before, with all my family wanting to kill me, still could become reality.       No, calm downI told myself -Valeria is much more mature than that. She wouldn't do something like that just because she feels embarrassed. I'd have to be really out of my mind for something like that to happen. Chill out.

Brake and think cold was the right thing to do. What I had to do now was eat something, relax, and think what I could respond to Laura. I didn't want to treat her badly, she didn't have anything to do with it and didn't deserve it.

I decided that it would be best to see her in person, but not make a big deal out of it. Just go out as friends and then tell her we don't work out as something more. That was option one. Option two was to say let's keep everything 100% behind my cousin's back. I went back and forth between the two. It was risky, but sometimes having the possibility of putting her in her place every now and then isn't something to take lightly, besides I didn't know if Valeria's thing would prosper or had been just a one-time thing. After all it was a complicated situation like for projecting into the future.

I decided to write her and start deciding the best path as I went along.       Hey! Everything's fine! Sorry about that. I just woke up. The pub might be good!

The response didn't take long to arrive.       Long night, no?

- None       Yes, it was Vale's birthday and we stayed out late.

- None       How was it? Did they have a good time?

- None       Yes, it was quiet, but it was good.

- None       Yes, she told me the same thing.

Did I speak with Valeria? Today? Why?       Ah! Did you talk to her already?

-        Yes, since you didn't respond and I knew we had celebrated my birthday with the family last night, I asked about the doubts to see if it was you. I asked above so nothing strange would be suspected.

Valeria isn't any dumbass, she already knew everything beforehand that I would confirm it to her. But it wasn't worth telling Laura anything, better cut the topic off there.       Ah! Okay. And how do you want to do tonight?

- None       If you like, we'll meet there at 10. It's near my house. I know it's not very close to you, but if you're stuck at home, you won't have to go back that far.

I couldn't tell him no without giving too many explanations. So I had to say yes instead.       If so! I'll see you there then.

I spent a good part of the afternoon imagining scenarios in my head about how I could behave with Laura that night. Until I didn't know what this was all about with my cousin and couldn't figure out where it would end, I couldn't risk it. I had to freeze the situation with her. Not do something that might bother Vale but also not get rid of Laura either. If my fantasy with my cousin didn't become reality, Laura was much more than a consolation prize. Definitely she was a girl I saw myself going out with.

6 pm arrived and I got a message from Laura.       Don't kill me, but does it bother you if Vale gets on us tonight at night?

That question completely threw me off. How did Valeria know we were going out? Laura hadn't told her anything and I hadn't told Laura that Valeria already knew.       My cousin?

- None       Yes, sorry! It's that he wrote to ask me if I had managed to locate you. It seems I wasn't very subtle when I wrote in the morning. He gave me to understand that he already knew we were breaking up, so I told him we're going to see each other tonight.

-        Wasn't it supposed to be between us?

I felt a bit of annoyance, all my plan to handle things calmly was coming undone.       Yes, sorry! But I think he already knew. Fortune didn't tell me anything bad. He took it super well. I worried about nothing at all.

No, I hadn't worried about anything. Valeria was super annoyed the night before and it was because Laura and I had been together after the bar. There was no way she could be taking all this well. She was faking to keep her friend from finding out. But if she came with us to the bar, she would explode for sure and the night would end in scandal. I had to come up with something to avoid her joining us.       It won't be weird that he comes with us?

- None       I told him the same thing, but he insisted a lot, I couldn't tell him no.

Oh my god! Clearly I wanted to face us and get into that crappy situation. Maybe even tell Laura what had happened the night before.

I knew Vale well enough to know how she could react in normal situations, but I had no idea how Laura would react when she found out I'd kissed my cousin. I already saw myself going viral on social media. The pervert everyone shares pictures for to warn women.

I couldn't think of many excuses to invent and eventually I was going to have to face the situation, so I decided to go ahead and accept what was coming. -       Okay, don't worry about it. We'll see each other at the bar by 10 and ready, Vale is crazy, not that it's going to ruin our night out.

-        Of course! Here you go, thank you! And sorry again!

I wasn't happy with the situation, but neither was there much I could do. Whatever happens, happens, I thought.

It was 22:15 when I arrived at the bar. I had been driving around for a good hour until I found where to park. Since it was a residential zone, there were many cars on the street and few places allowed to leave the car.

I entered the bar and started looking for Laura, I had warned her 10 minutes earlier that she was already here, sitting at a small table. I couldn't see her anywhere, the bar was quite full, as it usually is when you arrive at the end of the year. -       You have to keep going straight and look to your left, that's our table- It gave me a chill all over my body when I heard that. Immediately I turned around and saw her. -       Okay...

- None       Hello cousin– He said that to me with a smile.       HelloI responded like an automaton, not knowing how to react. She was just smiling at me, waiting for me to say something. It didn't seem she was angry about my decision to go out with Laura. That left me with no suppositions. Valeria was there to make me look foolish in front of Laura and humiliate me as revenge for kissing her and going out with someone else the next day. Oh, or she was just there to have fun at my expense. Seeing how I got nervous and twisted a bit. The second option was the most probable knowing her.       Come on, Law is waiting for us- Walking ahead of me and guiding the way while carrying a pint of beer in each hand. I had on a well-fitting jeans and a blouse that ended where the pants began, so you could see a bit of my back as it was rising up. And how I walked, that jean made it move from side to side like a pendulum trying to hypnotize me! What torture! -       Come on! Let's go!- She yelled at me, turning around, when she noticed I wasn't following her and snapping me out of my hypnotic trance.
God! It was worse from the front, you could see a bit of flat stomach totally plain, with the pants just below the navel line. Even it crossed my mind that it seemed like she didn't have underwear on, because at that height something should already be visible. If I looked up higher, the outfit ended with a fairly pronounced cleavage, clearly she was wearing a push-up bra.
She never dressed so exposed. She had left me frozen in shock.
We kept walking until we reached the table where Laura was seated.
-       Was it hard to park?He asked me smiling when he saw us arrive.       Yes, it's a mess coming here by car, super fullI said to her while giving her a kiss on the cheek and sitting down in the chair that was in front of her. Valeria had sat down in the one next to Laura, so I didn't have many other options.       I came by taxi, but he charged me a fortune, next time I'm going back on the bus – said my cousin making a face. We spent a good time chatting about everything a bit. The week we had just had and the one coming up. Until Laura mentioned my cousin's birthday.        How did they get through last night?– asked looking at Valeria.       Luckily for you!He replied with a smile       Yes, it was goodI added it myself       Is that weird?– insisted Laura, leaving me a little worried, thinking about why she was asking that.       No. Why?I replied with a slightly interrupted voice, taking a sip of beer to hide it. The two looked at me. Laura making a strange face and my girlfriend smiling. She was enjoying seeing me suffer.       No, to break conversation– said Laura as she placed her hand on mine. I shivered a little and think she noticed, because she softly withdrew her hand. –       I'm going to ask for another one. Want them?He didn't ask me and Valeria while he was getting up.       No, thank you. I still have half of this left- said my cousin.       Okay. I do want another one. Do you want me to go?I offered it to him.       No no, you were the last one, now I'm coming- said while walking towards the bar.

Vale and I stayed alone for the first time at night. I had been holding back for over an hour not to look at her cleavage, not to pay her any attention that corresponded to avoid Laura noticing something weird. But as soon as Laura disappeared from view, I turned around to look at my girlfriend.

There she was, looking at me with a smile on her face, completely aware of how particularly provocative she was being and how nervous it was making me.       It seems like you two are very affectionate-said maintaining his smile,       Sweetheart?I replied. He just looked at me with a face of 'Don't be silly' and kept smiling at me.       I can't blame her either. You're handsome today. You look very good in that shirt, cousin– said while smiling mischievously at me.       Thanks. You're very beautiful too.

-        Is it? Do you like what I'm wearing? He asked while pushing himself back a bit, looking at his cleavage and 'innocently' running his hand along the edge of it. Neither did I answer. My smile said it all. She was playing with me and enjoying herself. Our exchange of smiles was interrupted when Laura returned to the table. She gave me my beer and put her hand back on mine, actually on my forearm, caressing it a bit.       What were they talking about?– asked looking at Valeria with a smile.

My cousin delayed a little in answering. Her friend's gesture hadn't pleased her much.
-       Last night– said suddenly, making my heart stop for an instant. -       What? What was last night's thing?– asked Laura       My cousin is really good at some things– replied with total security and holding her gaze at her friend.       Skilled? Skilled with what?– Laura kept asking me again, caressing my forearm more. I wanted the earth to swallow me up right there.       He left me completely turned around last night, it was almost an abuse– said making a slight pause that my heart accompanied –I lost everything I bet playing poker against him. And that was my birthday! Zero mercy!

Laura laughed at my cousin's comment and we accompanied her in her laughter. Although mine was more nervous than anything else.

The conversation continued on other topics, a little of this, a little of that, while it was getting later, until suddenly in the middle of a silence that had fallen, Laura spoke.

-        I'm a bit tired. It seems like I'll be going home.

- None       Yes, I'm dead too– Valeria noted       Yes, I am the sameI said trying to take advantage of the opportunity to escape this weird night.       Do you want to come with me to my place and have something to drink after you get back?- asked Laura.       Weren't you tired?– said suddenly my first one. I remained silent, they were looking at each other and I preferred them to resolve it on their own. Unfortunately the move went wrong for me and the two looked at me to say something.       The truth, I'm pretty dead. If I don't get it, I'll also go home.

-        Sure?– insisted Laura giving me a look as if I hadn't understood what take something really meant. –       Yes, forgive me, it's that I have to get up early tomorrowI lied. My response didn't please Laura much, but I think she preferred to raise the tone more, the situation was already quite weird with my cousin in the middle.       Yes, obvious there's no problem. Anyway, we'll arrange for us to meet next week.– That last comment hadn't been casual. It seemed like Laura was trying to mark the fact that if it wasn't today, she'd do it next week, but we'd be seeing each other alone again soon. Vale noticed the tone her friend used and to add a bit more fuel to the fire, didn't hesitate to speak. –       Cousin, since you're heading home, can you reach me?- while she was smiling at me, Laura was glaring at her with a look.       Hmm... yeah, I suppose so. Law, are you sure it won't bother him?I asked Laura. The truth is that the whole situation was a bit strange, my cousin seemed to be marking territory.       No, obvious, go away. Better that you take her than it's too late for her to go by bus alone – what I was saying and what it seemed were going in totally opposite directions.

Finally we left the bar and said goodbye at the entrance. Laura and Valeria with a hug, and when I went to kiss Laura on the cheek, she moved her face and kissed me hard on the mouth, holding my face. When she let go, she looked at me straight in the eyes and bid farewell.       Be careful! See you!

I didn't say a word, started walking towards the car with Valeria on my right. On the way, we didn't exchange a single word. We walked three blocks in total silence.

We got into the car and headed to Vale's place. Yeah, it's where she lived.

The whole drive again, not a single word, just the radio playing. I was resisting the temptation to look at her all the time. I didn't know if she was mad at me and didn't feel like finding out, so I just kept driving.

When we arrived, I braked in front of Vale's house entrance. I pulled the handbrake and turned my head to the right to see my friend.

I hadn't finished turning when Valeria's lips were totally pressed against mine.

It took me by surprise. Until that moment, we had only exchanged a few glances and smiles throughout the night. But I didn't see it coming like that, so suddenly, less than an hour after Laura's goodbye.

Her mouth was pressed against mine, waiting for me to make a move. I took a couple of seconds to react but returned the kiss. I slightly tilted my head to the right and started kissing her lower lip, opening my mouth and starting to really kiss, slowly and intensely. Remembering the moment when the tip of my tongue met hers still gives me goosebumps. I think she felt it too because just after that contact, she leaned back slightly. I could swear she also smiled. I know it happened to me too.

We kept kissing slowly. I had brought my right hand to her cheek and was caressing it softly. We didn't want the moment to end. Partly because we didn't know how we would act when we saw each other again, but also partly because it was a unique situation. So many ups and downs, so much had passed until we got to this point that both of us wanted We knew it was only a matter of time before it happened, it was very hard to let that moment go. I placed my left hand on her leg in a very gentle way, she shuddered when I did that, she separated from my mouth for half a second and then went back to kissing me. I started moving my hand slowly up her leg, without any particular intention, it was a reflexive act, but she shuddered again. This time she separated slowly from my face and looked at me with her eyes. She was smiling. We were smiling. At the same time we bit our lower lip and felt it with our tongue, still savoring the kiss we had just given each other. We laughed when we realized we had done the same thing and that broke the silence inside the car.       WoofThat's all that came out of my mouth.       Yes, woofMy cousin smiled - I was waiting all night to be able to do that.       I tooI smiled and gave her a soft kiss on the lips. That mouth was irresistible having it so close.

We stayed in silence for a few seconds, looking at each other without really knowing what else to say. I wanted to start the car and get away from there, but I didn't want to pressure her.

Vale sat up straight in her seat and I did the same, looked ahead. I didn't know what to do with my hands, my left hand rested on the steering wheel and my right hand on my leg. I turned my head a little to be able to see her.
She was still looking straight ahead, still a bit lost but half-smiling. Probably thinking about what we could do. She looked at me and opened her mouth as if to say something. Finally she had something to say, because I was completely frozen.

At the same instant I saw behind my cousin that the lights of the house were turning on. Someone must be awake and if they're turning on the living room lights it's because they're in that room. Probably they've already seen the car. Vale saw my reaction and turned around to see what had happened behind her.       UfHe sighed while looking at the ceiling and let his head fall against the seat in clear sign of frustration.       They must have seen the car by nowI said to him       Yes, how heavy.

-        I don't think they'll see inside the car like that, it's nighttime and the windows are polarized.

- None       Yes, they didn't see anything there. It must be my old man who doesn't like it when I'm in a car outside the house for a long time. He's afraid someone will surprise us and try to rob us when we get home, just like my friends do when they leave me alone. He's paranoid– said while getting settled back into his seat and looking at me.       He's got some reason, he's capable of being better than othersI replied to her without having any real desire to let her go.       YesHe said the same thing, she felt the same way. Love was in her gaze of frustration.

Vale looked at the house one more time. She opened her purse to take out the keys and after closing it again, she looked at me.       Be careful– He said that to me with a tone between requested and ordered, which made me smile.       Yes, don't worry about it. Go ahead, rest.

She smiled when she realized how her phrase had sounded. Like a protective girlfriend. She looked at the house again, I think searching for the same thing as me, to see if no one was peeking through the living room's latticework curtain. She looked at me again and without hesitation slapped a kiss on me while grabbing my right cheek with her hand, as if to make sure I wasn't going to get away. It was only a second, but having her lips on mine again felt very good. We said goodbye with a smile and she got out of the car.

I stayed until I saw her get in and with my head still spinning, I faced towards home. I felt very well. Like at the end of a first date with someone you like, where everything goes as expected. But this was slightly different. It had been a weird night, but it definitely ended better than I would have expected. It wasn't just a game anymore, it wasn't just a secret we kept in complicity, something that only happened once, this was something more. I still had doubts about how to secure the thing. Something had become clear, Vale was marking his territory that night. He had left it clear that he wanted the same as me. With Laura last night wasn't the best, but I didn't care, going out with her already felt like a different night. The only thing taking up space in my mind was my first one. How lovely she looked that night, how well his pants fit and how sweet his lips felt. It would be hard to fall asleep.
