Plot and ThemesMother's desire/Woman's desire Argument. The mother is also a woman and, as such, is traversed by lack. What consequences does the mother's desire have on her son? How does the son inscribe himself in the woman's relationship to her lack? As a woman, the mother has a desire that goes beyond her son, surpassing him. Therefore, for the son, the mother's desire is enigmatic. The mother's desire at its foundation is insatiable, she always remains unsatisfied. For the son, the ghost of being devoured is a consequence of this maternal figure as a beast, omnipotent, voracious, threatening. The problem complicates when the woman as mother takes her son as an object-cause of her desire, the son as an object-a of the mother: in neurosis as a symptom of parental pair or in psychosis as a real object trapped in the maternal phantom. How to transmit a living desire that is not anonymous? The son should not be everything for his mother.
