Chichén Itzá (Maya: (Chichén) Mouth of the well; of the (Itzá) water wizards ) is one of the main archaeological sites of the Yucatan Peninsula, in Mexico, located in the municipality of Tinum, in the state of Yucatán. Important and renowned vestige of Maya civilization, the main buildings that remain correspond to the period of decline of the Maya culture called by archaeologists as the post-classic period.

The massive architecture that has reached our days and which is emblematic of the site today, has a clear Toltec influence. The god who presides over the site, according to Maya mythology, is Kukulcán, the Maya representation of Quetzalcóatl, a god taken from the pantheon of the Toltec culture. Given this, it must be considered that Chichén Itzá was a city or ceremonial center, which went through various construction periods and influences of the different peoples who occupied it and drove it since its foundation.
The archaeological zone of Chichén Itzá was inscribed on the World Heritage List by UNESCO in 1988. On July 7, 2007, it was recognized as one of the new seven wonders of modern world, by a private initiative without the support of UNESCO, but with the recognition of millions of voters around the world. Its name derives from Mayan words: Chi (Mouth), yo'en (Well), Itz (Magician, Wizard) and á (Water), combining the words to obtain the mouth of the well of water wizards. On the edge of the Well of Water Wizards or Chichén Itzá Huasteco Ch'iich'en (in state/appearance of bird), Huasteco Itzam' (Snake) Plumed Serpent. This is the name of what was one of the main settlements of the Mayans during the post-classic period in the Yucatán Peninsula, which is located 110 km east of Mérida, capital of the Mexican state of Yucatán.
