This precious discovery of the vaults of Stalinism throws new light on communist society, supposedly repressive of sexuality, in old Soviet Union. The fascinating scans come from an illustrated alphabet book published around 1931, apparently to combat widespread illiteracy in vast Soviet territories. It was drawn by Sergey Merkurov, the oldest of the Artists of the People of the USSR and academic at the Soviet Academy of Arts. Ironically, Merkurov is better known as author of three large monuments to Joseph Stalin in the USSR. Inspired by ancient Greek-Latin imagery, he dedicated himself to cheerfully awakening Cupids and satyrs alongside flying penises, Merkurov's marvelously illustrated book is not only a testament to some of the empire's strange efforts but also an effective way to finally learn those rare Cyrillic letters.
