A Pin-up is a model whose photographs or drawings primarily feature on the covers of magazines or calendars. The expression 'pin-up' popularized in the US in the 1940s and more so after World War II, as they were an incentive for soldiers. Thus we could see Pin-Ups in suggestive attitudes or even just with a smile, waving, looking at the camera, etc. on fighter jets, bombers, or calendars sent to the front.
Later this expression popularized internationally, used to refer not only to photographs but also to drawings, watercolors, paintings, and illustrations of beautiful girls in suggestive attitudes.
George Petty was born in Louisiana in 1894 and from a young age began working with his father, professional photographer, in his studio in Chicago, while studying fine arts at the city's Institute of Art. By that time he specialized in photographic retouching through an invented tool called aerógrafo (airbrush) in 1889.
