Lacan's conception – his Hegelian and even Sartrean side – is that desire is transcendence, lack, opening, while pleasure or happiness is balance, homeostasis. Deleuze defended this idea in an even more radical way when he said that masochism or courtly love were the manifestation of pure desire, the desire that doesn't need to be satisfied because it was already its own satisfaction.
