Joaquín Alberto Vargas y Chávez (Arequipa, Peru, February 9, 1896 - December 30, 1982) was one of the most renowned painters of pin-up models. At 16 years old, he moved to the United States in 1916 after studying Art in Europe before World War I.
In the early stages of his career, he worked as an artist for musical review Ziegfeld Follies and various Hollywood studios. He gained fame in the 1940s by creating pin-up style images for Esquire magazine. These paintings, also known as Varga Girls, were adapted to adorn the fuselage of many World War II aircraft.
A legal battle with Esquire over the use of the name Varga ended in a lawsuit against him, causing financial problems until the 1960s when Playboy magazine began using his paintings as Varga Girls. His career flourished and he exhibited his work around the world.
In 1974, the death of his wife Anna Mae devastated him and he stopped painting. The publication of his autobiography in 1978 revived interest in his work, partially pulling him out of retirement. He created some works, including album covers for The Cars (Candy-O, 1979) and Bernadette Peters (Bernadette Peters, 1980; Now Playing, 1981).
He died on December 30, 1982, at the age of 86 due to a cerebral hemorrhage.
Many of Vargas' works from his Esquire period are in possession of the Spencer Museum of Art at the University of Kansas. The images were donated in 1980 by the magazine along with other art pieces.
His work was typically done with watercolor and airbrush, in fact, the highest honor in the community of airbrush painters is the Vargas Award, awarded annually by Airbrush Action magazine.
His images usually depict women with idealized proportions, nude, semi-nude or elegantly dressed. The artistic features of Vargas are his slender fingers and toes, often painted nails red. Vargas is considered one of the best artists in his genre. He also participated as a judge for the Miss Universe contest between 1956 and 1958. Post dedicated to friend @grancucon
