Throughout the history of art, classical mythology has provided pretexts for representing things that would have had difficulty finding their place in a context dominated by Christian morality. For example, nudity and feminine sensuality. Thus, it is from mythology that the archetypal representation of the captive woman is generated. More specifically, from the myth of Perseus and Andromeda.
Andromeda
Andrómeda was the daughter of the kings of Ethiopia, Cefeo and Casiopea. They chained her naked to a rock (with her arms tied to hard reefs according to Ovid's Metamorfosis) to sacrifice her and appease Poseidon and the monster sent by him.Perseus (who was born when his mother was fertilized by the golden rain that Zeus gave her, incidentally) fell in love with the beauty of Andrómeda chained -like a statue, Ovid says- and freed her, eventually marrying her.
The representation of Andrómeda chained is not too frequent a theme but we find it in the work of great artists from the golden age of painting, such as Tiziano, Veronés, Rubens or Rembrandt.

The theme also appears in 19th-century painting, treated by Delacroix, Théodore Chasseriau, Gustave Moreau or Gustave Doré.

The Andromeda of this last one seems to me the most sensual of all, perhaps because Doré got it right in representing the fear and agitation of the heroine chained up before the monster, unlike many other artists who present her as a coward.

Another of the great artists of the 19th century, Ingres, interpreted a literary theme extracted from Ludovico Ariosto's Orlando Furioso, Ruggiero rescuing Angélica, following the scheme with which Perseus was usually represented liberating Andromeda. In this work, preserved at the Louvre Museum, the forced position of the young naked and chained woman stands out. On the other hand, it is not overlooked, the phallic symbolism of Ruggiero's long lance introducing itself into the monster's mouth.

For the theme of Andromeda, Tamara de Lempicka's interpretation deserves a comment, a prominent representative of Art Deco. Her Andromeda is a monumental, opulent, and sensual figure, who doesn't seem to care excessively about chains judging by her gaze and absence of rebellion. Does Andromeda appear submissive? It seems so. A submissive one that assumes her condition and teases with her greatest weapons, her gaze and the voluptuousness of her naked body.
