Santos Laguna 4 - 1 Penarol
Good and Holy
Santos Laguna thrashed Peñarol 4-1 in Torreón and became the first team to qualify for the Libertadores Cup quarterfinals. Despite starting with a goal from Toledo at minute one, the carboneros were unable to maintain their pace and were practically eliminated.
Peñarol was thrashed in Mexico and is practically eliminated from the Copa Libertadores, as it depends on Arsenal not scoring against Deportivo Anzoátegui in Venezuela and Santos Laguna at home, or rescuing a point in the worst-case scenario. The math says no, but clearly the Mirasol team is eliminated in the first phase for the third consecutive year.
The party started off impressively for Fossati's team, which was already winning by 52 seconds. Pacheco looked for Japo Rodríguez in the area, Abella cleared poorly back and Toledo headed directly to the net after being one-on-one and leaving the ball to bite. This way the Argentine entered alone, exposing flaws in a weak defense that was little attacked in the rest of the match.
Peñarol did not stay much firmer for the first 20 minutes, during which it generated three clear options despite defending with eight men on its field. The crossed passes for Quintero and the speed of the Colombian in one-on-one with Raguso were the arms of the Aztec team, which warned at 3' and equalized at 8'.
First, Quintero was close with a right-footer that hit the crossbar and then he equalized after appearing alone in the area with a keen eye on the Mirasol defender after a notable pass from Lacerda from the left. The fast attacking player of the local team, the best figure of the match, connected in mid-air and left Castillo without an issue.
Peñarol almost couldn't counter-attack, beyond the slowness that showed Santos Laguna in the transition from attack to defense. The Mexicans had the field and ball and almost turned it around at 12', when another change by Quintero ended in a clear goal option, but Valdez arrived just as Orozco was facing Castillo.
After an initial half-hour unfavorable period, during which they did not find the ball or could not string together counter-attacks, and also suffered the departure due to injury of Macaluso, Fossati's team at least looked more solid in their defensive zone until halftime and could control the speed better through the sides. Additionally, they neutralized Oribe Peralta in the center of the area.
Second half all Mexican
The second half maintained the tone, with a shot from Sandoval from the edge of the area that passed close, but gradually the pace of the game wore out Peñarol. On the other hand, the Mexicans looked much more cohesive and had a superior dynamic, to which they are accustomed in their domestic competition.
And again, the speed of reaction, like in the 1-1, cost a goal. Quintero put a shot from three-quarters of the pitch, Orozco received enabled because Darío Rodríguez delayed in giving the pass to leave him offside and nothing could be done by Castillo in a one-on-one where he had everything to lose. 2-1 Santos Laguna at 59' and uphill.
Fossati made changes to the team, put Albín for Valdez and passed Sandoval to the back line, but it still lacked speed, which was known that neither Pacheco nor Toledo would give him. Searching for it, he sent Carlos Núñez onto the pitch for Tony, but in his first opportunity the ex-Liverpool could not define in an unbeatable position after Raguso's center, who split to attack seeking the 2-2.
And in that general search by the entire team for the equalizer, Peñarol left spaces behind and the home team did not forgive, transforming what was a hard-won victory into a rout. Quinteros scored the 3-1 at 77' after picking up alone following Juan Pablo Rodríguez's pass, and then assisted Rentería to score the 4-1 at 78' with a shot between Castillo.
With those two fatal minutes for the carboneros, the game ended and Santos Laguna could even have increased their lead, which transformed them into the first qualified team to the quarterfinals of the Copa Libertadores and left Arsenal one step away from securing their passage to the next round.
