BDSM is the commonly used designation to refer to a series of related and linked sexual practices and preferences, typically associated with unconventional extreme sexuality.
The term is often used incorrectly as a synonym for sadomasochism. In reality, it's an acronym that gives its name to what is currently considered a specific subculture among its practitioners. BDSM is closely associated with the leather subculture.
The acronym is formed by the initials of some of these practices:

There are many fetish practices, including those of high heels, leather clothing and role-playing games in which each part assumes one of the roles, such as master/slave, doctor/patient, babysitter/baby, training games for pets, and others.
All activities within BDSM have a common element: participants construct, voluntarily and based on a situation of consent, relationships with marked power transfer, Erotic Power Exchange (EPE) where one part exercises the dominant or active role, and another part is submissive or passive.

The international community linked to BDSM has been emphasizing that practices be SSC, i.e., Safe, Sane and Consensual.
From the 1990s on, a new concept emerges, the Rack, which is being translated in the Hispanophone community as assumed and consensual risk for alternative (or unconventional) sexuality practices: racsa. The racsa puts emphasis on the personal responsibility of participants in a BDSM activity, informed and consensual responsibility to evaluate and assume the risks of that activity.
The majority of activists in the scene currently adopt the stance of pointing out that the SSC definition is suitable for communicating with the conventional or vanilla sexuality world, while maintaining that the term 'racsa' defines BDSM practices more rigorously and precisely.
Since many of the situations during a session contained elements of fantasy and/or role-playing, and some of them staged the protest of the submissive participant, it was necessary to create a communication system that would allow this person to clearly indicate when their protest was real and equivalent to the desire not to continue. And it was essential for the Dominant to be able to perceive this desire clearly and distinguish it from the scripted no, no more! that could be part of the agreed-upon sexual game. The solution was called Safety Word. It can be a word with quick pronunciation and sound (stop, tango), or one that is significant for whoever must remember it (for example, the name of a familiar person, etc.).
The safeword (also known as) is used by the submissive party to quickly indicate that the degree, circumstances or activity being developed is not to their liking and they want to stop. The BDSM ethic precludes that at all times the dominant party will respect such a manifestation and interrupt the activity.
Within the BDSM community, there are other minor forms of considering the use of safety word, especially for practitioners of metaconsensus. For them, the submissive or passive party voluntarily and previously consents to assume complete responsibility for the development of the session with the dominant or active party. In such cases, it is the active party that decides whether to interrupt or not the session, which implies (in addition to previous consent) a high level of trust and knowledge between both parties.
In the BDSM, two roles are identified: dominant (also used is the term top, or active) and submissive (also bottom or passive). The dominant one enjoys these practices by maintaining initiative and control of the action, while the submissive part obtains pleasure by surrendering to the dominant one, so that it be he who directs. Some people like to play both roles, depending on the moment or the person with whom they act. In that case, we speak of a switch, an English term designating something capable of switching or inverting an action or phenomenon.
There are also categories within the different roles:
Tutor: an experienced person in BDSM who initiates another. It can exercise any role, meaning a submissive person can be the tutor of a dominant one. However, it is most common for a dominant to act as a tutor for another dominant or a submissive.
Master: considered Master by a dominant who exercises their role impeccably in the eyes of the submissive, who gives this title if they consider it so.
Owner: dominant possessing one or several submissives.
Slave: submissive who sets limits for their Owner/ess.

The consensus established in all BDSM relationships is precisely what gives it a specific content, distinguishing it from any non-agreed violence situation, such as abuse, gender-based violence, etc.
The bondage is the practice of bindings or restraints on the human body, with aesthetic or sexual purposes. It may involve immobilizing the passive person, or not, it may include or not include securing this person to a fixed element, partial or total suspension, etc. Also, it is understood extensively as bondage the immobilizations with handcuffs, scarves, chains, etc.
Discipline is a genetic term that describes the activities of those who enjoy, actively or passively, erotic whipping, also known as the practice of erotic flogging. It consists in using the hand to whip mainly the buttocks of the passive person (in this case, receiving the specific name of spanking) or using some instrument, in which case the whipped area extends to legs, breasts, chest, etc., and it is spoken of whipping.

Meanwhile, a D/s couple doesn't disdain using any other practices; a session during a D/s ritual can be brief and improvised or prolonged for hours, including bondage, discipline, fetishism, suspensions, explicit sex, use of the pleasure-pain binary, etc.
Determined symbols specific to D/s relationships, such as the submission collar and ring, which originated as instruments of mutual social recognition, have spread throughout the BDSM scene.
Sadomasochism is a genetic term that defines relationships in which the binomial pain-pleasure has great importance as a means of materializing power exchange relationships. Sadism is referred to as the active practice carried out by people who feel sexual pleasure from punishing others. Masochism would be the passive practice, that of those people who experience sexual pleasure from suffering a determined intensity of pain.
Some couples within the BDSM community do not define their relationship based on the power structures configured in what is called Erotic Power Exchange. The most extreme form of this type of relationship would be the one known as 24/7, where the couple (usually in the roles of Master/servant) extends the staging of their living situation to the entirety of available time, that is, as if they lived permanently (24 hours a day, seven days a week) in the staged situation.
Given the diversity that characterizes BDSM, it's difficult to make a description (not even an enumeration) of the practices that most frequently occur in those types of relationships. Some of the most common practices may be: Bondage (ritualized or not) Cera (spilled on the body) Pinches (usually placed in strategic locations: nipples, groin area, etc.) Ritual submission Humiliation ritual Erotic flagellation Directed sexuality Use of certain signals (submission collar) Equestrian domination (Mounting and/or exhibition) Clothing code (for example, giving up the use of inner lingerie, women's submissive role pants, etc.) Erotic lactation Extreme sex practices (fisting, golden rain, etc.) However, many of the practices and uses do share a common importance, such as collars, initiation ceremonies, rings, marks and tattoos, clothing and code signals
