Martin van Maële, was a graphic artist from the early 20th century who showed through his drawings the hidden and intense side of sexuality, dirty and shameless at the same time. Despite this, very little is known about his life, only that he was born in 1863 in Boulogne-Billancourt, France, and married Marie Françoise Genet (the aunt of French writer and poet Jean Genet). The irony with which Van Maële's fine lines reveal the past implies different meanings; among them, that excessive modesty almost always brings the concealment of indomitable desires. Although he also illustrated other types of work, his most specialized stories were mainly sadomasochistic ones. Among his collaborations are pieces commissioned by H. G. Wells for The First Men on the Moon, some illustrations from Sherlock Holmes novels and covers of Paul Verlaine poetry books. As well as complementary images of texts by Choderlos de Laclos, Michelet, Diderot, Pietro Aretino, Charles Sorel, and Pierre Mac Orlan. Many of these books were only printed in dozens due to the censorship that had all material that did not conform to permitted morality. Here are some of his brilliant illustrations, accompanied by Tom Waits' music...
