André Collot was a known illustrator for his erotic drawings in clandestine publications, low-budget versions of classical literature and special editions commissioned by order. His extensive production of images illustrated books such as Rabelais' Gargantúa and Pantagruel, Pierre Jean de Béranger's Galante Songs, Libertinage School or Marquis de Sade's 120 Days in Sodom, romances like Erckmann-Chatrian's L’ami Fritz, Afrodita by Pierre Lou, some biblical texts and stories such as the Apocalypse of St. John and possibly written by Pierre Lou during Jesus' time, also erotic and journalistic reports by Pascal Pia. His illustrations were made using various techniques: etchings, glass and wood engravings, inks, watercolors, and charcoal drawings, most presented with date and signed but also a large number of anonymous illustrations identified by style and theme.
Collot was born in the city of Montigny-le-Roi, a French commune located in the Champagne-Ardenne region in 1897 and died at the age of 79 in 1976. We know that he exhibited at the Salon d’Automne and the Independent Artists' Salon in 1942 and 1943.
The strong sexual images including rapes, bizarre sex, and lesbian fantasies gave him recognition as a French clandestine erotic illustrator for his explicit content although also tasteful and framed in fantasy scenarios. Many of his images are censored, yet Collot is recognized as one of the most important illustrators of the clandestine erotica that circulated during wartime.
