Félicien Rops, an artist from the second half of the 19th century, participated as one of the precursors of decadentism in Europe, same current that presented a particular interest in esoteric and satanic matters and the female figure.
Rops is characterized by the production of works with diabolical, esoteric, and sexual themes; in a somewhat irreverent tone this artist painted crucial topics such as the hypocrisy of society he lived in, religion, and the position of women under male gaze: frivolous and dominant. These themes were very popular within the decadentist group. In the artist's own words: Man is possessed by woman, and woman possessed by the Devil.
