Masturbation
It is the stimulation of genital organs with the aim of obtaining sexual pleasure, which may or may not lead to orgasm. The verb 'masturbate' refers to the practice of masturbation. Masturbation can be performed by oneself in solitude or as stimulation carried out on another person's genitals for the same pleasurable purposes, as occurs in mutual masturbation.
Masturbation usually occurs with hands or through the friction of genitals against an appropriate object, such as called 'sexual toys', to obtain this type of excitement. Sigmund Freud is credited with discovering that masturbation is common in childhood. However, we owe more knowledge of human sexuality today to a contemporary of his: Havelock Ellis. This author not only noted that masturbation was common among men, but also that it was a habitual practice among women of all ages.
Different terms have been used to refer to this sexual activity: autoerotism, ipsation, masturbation, onanism, among others. In any case, the origin of the word masturbation is uncertain.
The first known reference comes from Martial, a Hispano-Roman satirical poet of the 1st century of the Christian era. The voice could derive from a compound word with Latin roots: manus, 'hand' and turba, 'alteration', 'perturbation', 'excitation'. So, masturbation would mean 'to excite the penis'. It could also proceed exclusively from Latin: manus stuprare, 'to violate with hand', or manus turbare, 'to excite with hand'.
In any case, it usually prefers to be stuprared, because historically it has been considered dirty to masturbate. Although being turbated results in more eclectic and indicates what the act consists of, does not prejudice either the sex of who practices it or whether the activity referred to is good or bad.

Over time, the meaning has varied and today it is synonymous with masturbation. Another frequent euphemism generated by this story is 'Onán's disease'.
The modern medicine recognizes that masturbation does not produce significant damage in the short or long term, and considers it a normal practice, even stress-relieving.4 Throughout history, however, there were always voices that claimed that masturbation was an immoral act. The basis of such criteria would be, according to those voices, that masturbation would prevent the human species from surviving on the planet due to the unproductive emission of semen in the case of males. And in the case of female masturbation it was claimed that if women masturbated they could distance themselves from men by preferring self-pleasure.

It wasn't until the 18th century that the supposed 'moral damage' caused by masturbation was added to the 'physical damage': it began to be said that masturbation, besides condemning souls, caused a multitude of diseases. Many methods were devised to discover children and girls who masturbated,[citation required] and numerous remedies against masturbation were created. Some of them included: circumcision without anesthesia, rough gloves, special devices that prevented access to the genitals, electric shocks, treating the genitals with nettles, or surgically removing them.

In decades that followed, psychological terrorism replaced other measures. For example, it was said to children that if they masturbated, hair would grow on their hands, their face would turn green, their penis or clitoris would dry up, they would go crazy, pimples would appear on their face... In the US and other English-speaking countries, neonatal circumcision became a routine practice due to supposed preventive effect against masturbation and clitoridectomy of girls found doing it. The latter was abandoned by the mid-1930s, but neonatal circumcision of boys is still practiced.

Interestingly, the father of psychoanalysis maintained until an advanced age that adult masturbation was the cause of one of the forms of neurosis known at the time under the name of neurasthenia, equivalent in current times to what is now called fibromyalgia or chronic fatigue.

According to the Spanish psychiatrist Jesus Ramos Brieva, there are various prejudices in popular culture regarding masturbation:
Men masturbate more.
It is often claimed that men masturbate with a weekly frequency, which is double the number of times women do. However, there are investigations that demonstrate that men systematically lie in sexual surveys by exaggerating how often they engage in autoerotism, while women lie in the opposite sense, minimizing the frequency (typical female response: once a month). If we correct the claims of both and others, as serious research has done, the data tends to converge: thus, men and women masturbate with a similar frequency.
Men start masturbating before women do.
According to the studies compiled by Ramos Brieva, it is not true that men initiate in masturbation before women because they have a more obvious sexual organ and need to touch themselves daily for physiological and hygienic reasons. It has been proven that there are more women than men who initiate in masturbation before the age of 10. They do so between 20% and 42% of women, at least, and between 3% and 13% of men. Also, there is a 42% to 52% of women who start doing it, like men, during adolescence. Therefore, women learn to masturbate spontaneously more frequently than men (they do so as girls and without having talked about the topic with anyone), who usually initiate later after talking to their friends or reading about the topic (women: between 57% and 62%; men: 28%)
People stop masturbating when they start having sexual relations
According to the studies cited in the book, men and women continue to masturbate after establishing a romantic relationship. Even if such relationships are satisfying, 75% of men and 75-91% of women in a committed relationship continue to do so. It has been observed that while the frequency with which married men resort to masturbation decreases over time, it remains the same or increases in most cases, especially among younger women. This idea contradicts the popular notion.
Those who masturbate isolate themselves socially
The psychiatrist Jesus Ramos denies this assumption, concluding that masturbation does not produce isolation, having been proven that most human beings masturbate and have normal sexual relations. Other sources explain that in isolated people who do not know how to relate to others, masturbation develops as a form of sexual satisfaction since they do not have the opportunity to develop the sexual activity that appeals to sharing with other people, being unable to relate to those people.
