The mammary glands are the organs that, in all mammals, produce milk to feed the young or offspring during the first months or weeks of life. It is defined as mammary gland all simple mammary glands that supply a nipple. Women typically have two composite mammary glands, one in each breast and each consisting of between 10 and 12 simple glands. The number and position of simple and composite mammary glands vary widely among different mammals. Nipples and glands can appear anywhere along the lactiferous line, two parallel lines formed by a thickening of the epidermis on the ventral surface of mammals.
