Although it may seem that Bram Stoker, with Dracula, was the creator of vampirism and the vampire myth, the origins of this creature date back to times immemorial.
Almost always we try, therefore, to seek the origins of vampirism or vampires in literature and perhaps we are not going wrong, but we should not limit ourselves to fantastic works inspired by them.
The Egyptians, Chinese, Babylonians, Greeks, Romans, among many other civilizations, already spoke long ago of creatures and monsters that sucked blood.
The word vampire has identical translation in numerous countries: vampyr in Serbia, pamgri in Hungary, danag in the Philippines, kosac in Croatian, upir in Russian, and countless more.
The etymological origin of the word 'vampire' is Slavic ('vampir') and its meaning would be something in between a flying, blood-sucking, and wolf-like being.
Later, through German, the term would pass to Hungarian, although it doesn't seem to have entered Western European languages until 1730 due to a mysterious collective hysteria episode triggered precisely in Hungary.
But let's go back in time and take a small tour of the vampire figure throughout history and its presence in different cultures:
In ancient Egypt, we find deities like Srun, characterized by a wolf-like appearance with long fangs, who fed on the bodies of his human victims.
In ancient Greece, there existed the legend of 'Lamia', daughter of the Oriental king Belus, whose sons were killed by the goddess Hera after she discovered that 'Lamia' had an affair with Zeus. To avenge herself, 'Lamia' began to pursue all children she found and extract their blood to feed on them. This legend became a superstition transmitted in rural areas of Greece, telling how 'Lamia' attacked all lost travelers seduced by the beauty of the 'blood-sucker'. This case is the most similar to the historical conception of vampire. Also in Greek mythology we find the case of 'Empusa', daughter of the goddess Hécate, a being with bronze feet and monstrous that could transform into a beautiful woman and conquer men to take advantage of their blood. Additionally, in Greece there were legends about 'striges', deities with a woman's face and bird's body that absorbed human blood while they slept. There was also a being called 'Vrycolaka' who attacked his family after death.
Authors like Virgil, Pliny, Herodotus, Homer or Aristophanes believed in the existence of werewolves, as well as other beings Spectral beings called 'empusas' - later linked to the Roman 'lémures' (spirits of the deceased) - that adopted different aspects to kill children and feed on their blood.

In the Classical Roman era, besides the already mentioned lemures, one also feared the appearance of Strix, a flying vampire that spread terror among peasants.
In ancient China, one feared a vampire capable of sucking the blood of its victims in just a few seconds, called Kiang. Additionally, there is knowledge of a devil, Giang Shi, that acted similarly.
Making a considerable leap in time, in Central European folklore, especially in Romania, we find that peasants felt a deep fear before the always-intuited presence of the Strigoi, a repulsive being with horse or goat legs, that fed on their blood while they slept.
All this without forgetting that, according to some interpretations of the Old Testament, the first vampire in history was Cain since, after killing his brother Abel, he reneged from God and was condemned to wander the rest of his days, hidden in darkness, far from the light of the sun, feeding on ashes and blood.
